Is it better to wash dishes in cold or hot water? Post soaking?

I know it's more environmentally friendly to use cold water, so I was wondering if it is worth it to try to only use cold? I feel like the dishwashing detergent doesn't rinse off as quickly with cold, so perhaps trying to use it is wasting more water?

The hottest water you can use is always the best way to kill germs and bacteria. It also works the best to dissolve food off of dinner plates and silverware. Cold water does not sanitize dishes nor kill bacteria and germs and mostly can be used to rinse dishes off before putting them into the dishwasher or a sink full of hot sudsy water. Cold water is not a good way to wash dishes and keep within safety regulations for sanitation. You must kill germs and bacteria so it is not spread to others. That is the most important reason we use the hottest water available.
