Is it necessary to have a passport on a closed-loop cruise?

Me and my boyfriend are going on a cruise (closed-loop). I have a passport and he doesn't. He is a U.S. citizen with a valid drivers license; should he get a passport for the cruise in addition to this? We are going to the Bahamas. Any help is appreciated, thanks!
