Depends on what you want to do. If you are staying in Waikiki you can walk to the beach, walk to the shops, walk to the restaurants and bars. If you want to see more of Oahu than just Honolulu, you could either take a bus (they have tour buses) or rent a bike.

Yes, if you want to travel around the island. The best spots to see are on the opposite side of the island. Waikiki so touristy. Rent a car and travel across the island. Head to the infamous North Shore and look for a restaurant named the Crouching Lion. Stop along the way and marvel at the fact that you are the only one on the beach! It is like being on your own tropical island. Warm breezes and so tranquil. You will never regret renting a car. Get out of the city and explore.

a lot of times parking is a bitc#,

during the day's and evenings "the Bus" (local transit) goes pretty much everywhere, but by midnight stops running.

you can party downtown waikiki on foot (stay in brightly lit areas there are criminals even in paradise)
