Its it okay to leave hunting rifles and shotguns in vacation home with no one there for a few months at a time? They would be locked in a gun locker or in a safe of course.

Is this a problem for people to do even if its in a safe, or is it okay for the most part. Has there been problems in the past with people doing this? There is also cleaning service that dust and cleans the house once every couple of weeks.

Generally a vacation home would be a higher risk target for thieves, especially if they know the owners will be away for weeks at a time.

This being said, it would only be safe to store firearms at a vacation home if they were in an extremely heavy all metal gun cabinet that's bolted to the floor. However even in that case I would only store guns there that are not the best of your collection.

Then again if you can afford a vacation home and one of those $3,000 gun cabinets, then you could probably afford a good security system too.

One of my uncles leaves his shotguns and rifles in a gun safe in one of the houses we built. However, it is in the middle of nowhere and the nearest town has a population of about 400 (most of which we know). The house also has an alarm system on it and one of us is there just about every weekend. I have left one of my .22lr marlin rifles there a few times too. Nothing has ever happened to any of our guns or other property. Personally, I do not like leaving my guns for any period of time because I am extremely protective of all of my possessions. My uncle does not seem to care as much and so that system works for him. Some things to consider for your situation: How well do you know the people in the area? How well do you trust the cleaning service people? How secure is your safe? If you are leaving the weapons for a few months make sure they are properly prepared for storage.

Overall, I suggest that you evaluate your situation and determine whether the risks of leaving the guns there outweigh the hassle of lugging your firearms back and forth each time you visit your vacation home. Good luck and remember, if there is any doubt, better safe than sorry!
