day off from work? I work in a management team at a retail shop and it seems lately that I can't have a single day off without phone calls. And they aren't always for questions that need to be asked right then anyhow. Can I actually turn my phone off for a day and still be considered an effective manager?

it's holidays. you should have your phone ready, retail is crazy... especially during the holidays. on the flip side, your upper management shouldn't be harassing you on your day off - if they were strong leaders they wouldn't.

put the best foot forward. if you don't look like you are dedicated, you might find yourself without a job.

Are they paying you for that day? No? Then I say you shouldn't have to answer. Your job needs to stop failing at having ineffective/stupid people working on your days off.

If you're the general manager, then sorry, it's part of your job to be available. If, however, you are simply one of several assistant/junior managers, then yes, it's totally appropriate for you to turn off your phone in order to get some private time. The problem may be that you're too available, and it's easier for others to simply call you, rather than solve the problem themselves. To avoid a misunderstanding, let your boss know before you leave that you won't be available on your cell the next day (your day off), so that it doesn't come as a surprise.
