Is laughing at ridiculous beliefs effective in getting people to abandon them?

No, it makes you look like an arrogant asshole. If you want someone to abandon a belief, talk to them over time. It won't be instant.

Yes. A Moral Dilemma by Jonathon Swift proves that. The problem is discerning what is and is not ridiculous.

its an effective way to loose all of your friends.

no , not at all, it emboldens them. I read a report, can't remember where or i'd link it, that tested people's abilities to accept and process challenging materials. They performed the test recently and again more than ten years ago. what they found is that, perhaps due to the heightened communication age we live in now, there is no difference between what is said and the speaker. they can easily doubt any fact or accept any opinion as fact that they want because there is too much information of either side to deal with. the experiment had people read information about things they thought they knew about but didn't fully. ten years ago, a percentage of them actually changed their minds, others considered the information. now, very few even consider the information, instead they get all jacked up on honor and ego.

No because it makes the person either defensive (becoming more stubborn), angry or spiteful. And it feels awful to be ridiculed because it makes one feel worthless and unimportant and unloved.

Who cares?
I cannot help but laugh at the ridiculous. Fools are for laughing at.

I don't think that Christians will be any more likely to abandon their superstitious beliefs if people resort to condescending laughter. However, a minority will abandon Christianity if they are convinced their religion is a fraud with rational arguments.
