Is MMA absolute proof that traditional martial arts are not effective?

i was watching a recent TKD demonstration and all the multiple high kicks look flat out silly. now, i am not a hater as i have a black belt and used to love kicking like bill wallace myself when i was younger, but has mma now shown that traditional kicks, punches (i.e. reverse punch) stances, etc just do not work in realistic situations? i was reading an interview with sylvester stallone and he was more or less saying randy couture had the whole crew and stunt men of "the expendables" nearly urinating in their pants because he was such a "real life" badass. are guys like couture, hughes and others the true warriors of our time? does traditional karate have the lowest amount of respect it has ever had?

TKD demonstrations are just that, demonstrations. You'll never find any kind of traditional MA that has a demonstration that isn't flashy. It's a demonstration. Just because they 'can' do those kicks doesn't mean they're trained to use them in self defense.

However, some people can pull things like that off. Look at Mauricio "Shogun" Rua's highlights.

In fact, as far as self defense effectiveness goes, MMA is at the bottom of the totem pole. The only thing MMA proves is what arts practice best within the sanctioned MMA rules, nothing more. There's a huge number of arts that aren't effective in MMA due to rules that are very effective in real combat. When was the last Krav Maga MMA fighter you've seen? Who would you rather have on your side in a real fight between 5 people you, and this other person? BJ Penn or a Krav Maga instructor? I think the easy decision is the krav maga instructor and if you don't think so then you're fooling yourself.

It is clearly obvious by your description that you do not know or have seen the real traditional; martial arts. The commercial crap taught under the names of Taekwondo, Karate, .....etc. are for the most part only a semblance of real traditional martial arts. they are like a shadow. A shadow can not exist without some real solid object and light to illuminate it. but no one would call a shadow a real object. Yet many people continue to put down the martial arts that are only a shadow while having on understanding that they are not the real thing.

Randy Couture is a f*cking badass. I just finished watching UFC 44 when he fought and beat Tito Ortiz from unanimous decision at age 40! I agree with you, MMA has evolved so much and quickly became the best system. The age of The Karate Kid has passed, now its all about MMA.

However, traditional martial arts are still useful for defending yourself against a bully or a group of bullies. But an MMA fighter would beat a karate, kung fu, TKD fighter anyday.

No, I believe your conclusion is erroneous.

Traditional martial arts are not effective inside the octagon for a rules based competition because most of their techniques are against the rules. MMA competition does not allow for joint/organ destruction, groin shots, eye and throat strikes, etc. Such rules take the claws out of these martial arts.

In a no-rules scenario, you can see just how effective traditional martial arts are.
