Is religion being used by the rich and corrupt to sedate the less powerful?

I think since the beginning in christianity there have been opportunists, but were should true belivers draw the line so as not to be taken advantage of. I see in america allot of "christians" have been involved in some devilish things throughout history and they use script taken out of context to justify it. Why don't they see the truth? I might get called a witch for this.
