I was driving to work and the oil light on my dash came on. I was only about 10 minutes away, so I kept going. I began to hear a buzzing sound that got worse to the point that I began to shift gears at lower RPMs than normal so it wouldn't be so loud. At the first intersection I came to, I had to downshift and the engine died. I managed to get it going again, but it died a few more times, all when the engine was at RPMs below 2,000. When it died for the last time, I was able to get it started a few times, but the engine would immediately cut out. My oil light was still on, my check-engine light came on and the digital clock on my dash reset itself. My car didn't have an oil leak that I knew of (I would have seen oil in the snow) and I had just gotten back from a round trip of 300 miles the day before with no problems. Is my engine seriously fried or could it be something else?
My car is a 1997 VW Cabrio with 153,000 miles on it. I wasn't due for an oil change for another 500 miles.
