Is the Mercedes Benz a guzzler?

I am having doubts in my mind if really a Mercedes Benz car is a fuel guzzler. In the present world, when all manufacturers are trying to come up with more fuel-efficient cars, Daimler Benz would be the last to embrace modern technology to design high quality but fuel efficient cars. Are the cars really that bad in terms of fuel? If so which ones are bad and which ones are economizers? What technology do they use in fuel efficiency? Do they use EFI?
