'Wasteful in what way?' - Well all that money, labor and material used to build churched for example. How about hospitals, schools and science laboratories instead? You know...something USEFUL to mankind
I am hard pressed to conceive of anything more wasteful - not even close

It depends on the situation.

Looking at the Hispanics in America, their faith in Roman Catholicism keeps them together in a tightly-knit community. Same with certain Asian groups. For the antithesis, you look at the black community and see numerous incarcerated African-American males who don't provide a role model, single mothers struggling to live, and a loss of family values.

Religion keeps certain groups together, which is good and bad in a way.

Haha that is a good question... when you factor in all the death and wasted effort it has caused, I would say no, there isn't.

"The most ridiculous concept ever perpetrated by H. Sapiens is that the Lord God of Creation, Shaper and Ruler of the Universes, wants the saccharine adoration of his creations, that he can be persuaded by their prayers, and becomes petulant if he does not receive this flattery. Yet this ridiculous notion, without one real shred of evidence to bolster it, has gone on to found one of the oldest, largest and least productive industries in history." — Robert A. Heinlein about prayer

I'd say that baseless discrimination falls into a close second. I could never understand hating someone for something they cannot control. It matters not what a person is born, but what they choose to be. For you religious people who are reporting this question, even as I type, consider that your religion is in fact a lie. Ask yourself "why do I believe?" Perhaps it is because you were just raised that way. Instead of calling Atheists wrong....consider whether you are correct....

I can think of one thing that might be even worse:

Spending time in a forum you think is wasteful to begin with.
