Cordy woke up to the pattering sound of the rain, she looked at her alarm clock - in digital numbers it displayed 6:00AM. Outside was dark and gloomy, the feeling of something bad is going to happen in any second but like most people did, Cordy just shook the feeling off , got dressed, and went down stairs to eat breakfast. She was running a little late so she just poured some cereal and devoured it in a few hungry gulps. On her way to work she noticed that everybody looked rather sad. She stopped her car and shouted to her neighbors
“Hey why is everybody looking sad?”
“I don’t know but I feel like something terrible happened today don’t you?” Ronda asked.
“Not really.” replied Cordy simply and drove off.
However, after thinking a little bit more on the topic, Cordy did come to realize that she felt like something was wrong- almost as if a memory of her childhood was gone. As she pulled into the parking lot of her work, she parked her car in the only sunny spot. She slammed the car door and quickly walked to the building, high- heels clicking against the cement of the lot. As she entered the building, she pushed the uneasy feeling she had to the back of her mind and entered the narrow elevator, pressing the round, glowing TENTH FLOOR button, watching patiently as the elevator doors closed. Cordy noticed another presence, and realized it was Sally Winston. Cordy looked her up and down, taking in Sally's narrow face and wavy, sandy-black hair
“How are you today?”
“Well for some reason I feel kind of down .” Replied Sally. That was the answer that she was dreading. Their must be some reason that everybody, including her, was feeling down. This was irritating.
“Do you know why you feel down?” She asked.
“Not really, just one of those days why?”
“Because I’ve noticed that everyone seems sad and depressed. I’m even depressed for some reason I just want to know WHY. Shouted Cordy. She looked at Sally and she looked frightened.
“I’m sorry, Its just that I feel like it has something to do with my family and if it does then I don’t know what to do. I’m scared that’s all.
“Well does your husband, Tom, feel the same way?”
“I don’t know he was still sleeping when I left for work.” answered Cordy. The elevator made a ding like noise and the doors opened but she still wanted to talk to Sally. “Listen I still want to talk to you.”
“Well I used to be a therapist so come to my office and we’ll talk.” said Sally.
“Really?” asked cordy sounding a bit desperate.
“Really, even if we have to talk for hours.” replied Sally.
Cordy was so lucky to have a friend like Sally. In fact if it weren’t for her Sally wouldn’t even have this job. They made there way to Sally’s office and when they finally got there Sally said simply “ Go ahead and sit anywhere you like. Cordy decided to sit on the big red couch that was closest to Sally’s desk.
“Think really hard about what makes you sad. It lies in your deep thoughts and emotions. Just relax and focus on your sad feelings.” Instructed Sally.
Cordy laid down on the couch and tried to relax. Thirty minutes had passed and finally Cordy began to understand what had happened. It was her sister Karen and her sisters husband Bob. Something bad had happened to them. Cordy had a feeling that they had died but that couldn’t be. She hadn’t seen them for eleven years ever since Karen had gotten pregnant. Their was so much they didn’t get to do.
“IT WAS MY SISTER.” Screamed Cordy from the top of her lungs. Cordy didn’t bother to explain. She got up and ran to the stairs. She didn’t feel like waiting. As she was running down the stairs she began to think that maybe she was just imagining things, maybe her sister was fine, maybe they would still be able to get to do things in the future. Cordy exited the building, went to her car, and drove home.
When she got into her home she instantly knew that something was wrong, Tom was sitting on the couch looking sad. Maybe her sister did die.
“I have some bad news.” Said Tom looking worried.
“Well what is it Tom. She asked impatiently.
“ You better sit down.”
Cordy sat down at the very edge of the couch too afraid of what he was going to say. Her worst fears where coming true. Please no.
“Yesterday Karen and Bob where driving and they got hit by a drunk driver. They didn’t survive.
“NO it can’t be your lying to me. It can’t be. At that moment she began crying hysterically. She’d never broke down like this ever before.
“What about her kids?” Asked Cordy still crying.
“What will happen to them. I got to get out of here.”
She ran to the door and as she slammed it she heard her husband yell “Wait let me explain.” There was no time to explain. She got into the car and started the engine and backed out of the drive way. Cordy didn’t know where she was going, she just didn’t want to be here.
Cordy just screamed past the traffic lights past the stop signs. She was going 50 miles then 60 then 70 then 80 then it reached as fast as it could go 90 miles per hour.Everything was a blur she didn’t care what happened she had to go on and just continue straight. Suddenly there was a loud honk then the sound of medal crashing. The next thing cordy knew she and her car was rolling over and over. When it came to a stop she noticed people screaming and that blood was coming from her head and then nothing just blackness, total and utter darkness.
Beep…beep…beep. That’s what Cordy heard when she woke up. For a moment she saw everything as a blur then when her vision cleared up she saw Tom sitting by her and holding her hand.
“Tom, What happened to me?” asked Cordy softly.
“ You got into a car accident after you went into a kind of shock. Do you remember the bad news?”
It was all coming back to her now. The car crash, the news of her sister dying, and everybody looking sad.
“Yes, I
“Yes, I remember everything including the bad news.” replied Cordy so softly you could hardly hear her.
“ You have to stay strong if not for me then for your sisters children, Ashley, Joe, and Eric.” Said Tom sounding worried about her.
“I won’t do something like that ever again and what do you mean for my sisters children. We aren’t the ones who get custody are we? She asked.
“Yes we are. In a week we’re meeting up with your sisters lawyer. It would be sooner but you have to be in the hospital for about a week. Besides the children it looks like your sister left us something else.” He said. Cordy was honored to be the one looking after her sisters children but she hoped that the other something that her sister had left them wasn’t too good or expensive that stuff should go to their mother, who lived in California. She was interrupted in her thoughts by her husband.
“What was that dear?” Asked Cordy.
“I asked where your sister lived.”
“She lived in Sandpoint, Idaho, why do you ask?”
“Hey why is everybody looking sad?”
