Some atheists are either UU, Buddhists or Lavey Satanist. Why would an Atheist join a religion when they want to free themselves from established moral and metaphysical philosophies?

I know plenty of atheists and none of them are part of a religion. Although buddhists aren't really a religion as they have no god (most at least), it is really just a system of beliefs

Not all atheists "want to free themselves from established moral and metaphysical philosophies". They just don't believe in any god, which is not a requirement of UU, Buddhism, or Laveyan Satanism.

I am not in a religion currently but I have been as an atheist in the past. I think non theistic religious practices can be about cultivating certain traits and exploring deeper connections to self, others, and the world. It can also provide a community of like minded people. I think many rituals have psychological value aside from any supernatural events or beings existing as well. Depending on the situation they help us to connect more deeply with self, environment, or others, impart a sense of identity, reaffirm commitments and values, help us negotiate change in our lives, commemorate important life transitions, and generate positive memories. I don't think any supernatural beliefs are necessary at all to find some value in these things. There are though also atheists who do have supernatural or metaphysical beliefs, just not god beliefs. All atheism means is lack of belief in deities. Not all want to completely withdraw from all established metaphysical practices. It most certainly doesn't mean a rejection of morality for most atheists although they may disagree with some concepts of morality set forth by different religious beliefs. Then again so do various religions disagree with each other on what is moral behavior.

Atheism is simply not believing in deities. There are many religions that have no deities (many sects of Buddhism, for instance, don't have deities.) So, no, it's not odd, really.

Umm, atheists just don't believe in any gods.

Desired freedom from established moral and metaphysical philosophies, completely optional.

An atheist is someone who believes that God does not exist. That is all an atheist is. Anything else is not atheism, it is their separate personal views. All atheists do not necessarily believe the same thing in the same way that all theists do not necessarily believe the same thing or even all Christians or all Protestant Christians. People do not fit into a little pigeon hole. They are able to think for themselves.

hell, no. Business leads and contacts are one of the important things that people choose religions for. Don't imagine people to be so scrupulous

Atheist" A (non) theist (god). The religions you name don't have god's so technically you could call those religious members atheists, but it would be far more apt to identify them as what they are, for example Buddhist rather than Atheist. Why didn't you just look up the definition of atheist instead of asking that?

not at all... because atheism is the lack of belief in gods... it's not a "world view" of any kind so it leaves the person open to choose other things to believe in.

Most of us are less likley to join a religion, this is true, but it's not so uncommon for atheists to be in religion.

Atheism is the negation of Theism. Theists are those who believe in a god (monotheist) or gods (polytheist). It seems like it's anti-religion because we are so heavily influence by Christianity's emphasis on the deity, so most the claim atheism are also anti-organized religion as per their experiences with Christianity's tendancy to ostrasize and threaten other beliefs.

The ONLY thing atheism is is not believing in deities. That's all. There is no more. Thus, atheists can be "spiritual", members of a religion, etc.

And many of us do have morals, regardless of what certain bigots think.

The systems you've mentioned here all have non-theistic options, and hence, would be appropriate for atheists.

perhaps you are mistaken agnostics for atheists?

also buddha is a man and not a god.following the teachings of buddha is not religion

You have falsely assume why atheists are atheists.

I was an atheist until my 30's. Getting "free" from something had absolutely nothing to do with my position.

not if its the ones that require no repenting...it is all the same to God when they deny the TRINITY!!

There are plenty of Christian Atheist....... There mostly in the closet about their atheism
