I smoke cigarettes and marijuana for 5 years now and every morning after a few hours of being awake and having my morning smoke ritual, I cough up hella tar. It's not directly after I smoke but 30 mins or so. I think it's a good sign, I know lots of smokers who never cough up anything and never had. Thats unhealthy. Yes we all know smoking anything is terrible for your body, but from a professional or experienced point of view,
Is it healthy to cough up tar then not cough up anythig at all? I assume it is your lungs are being cleaned..

NO.
Yes, your lungs are getting cleaned, but you don't know what caused the tar to be cleaned out.
It's like saying that when you're peeing and you see blood in your urine, that it's a good sign because your bladder is getting ''cleaned out''.
If something like that happens there is always an underlying cause.
Seek professional help ASAP.

I don't know. I wouldn't freak out too much. You're not coughing up tar, you are coughing up phlegm. Which means your lungs are doing their job, but in overtime. I smoke both as well, but would rather give up the tobacco. (Uh, why isn't pot legal yet?). I, on the other hand, have no morning tobacco ritual. I can't even stand the smell of it unless I've had lunch. then all bets are off.
I should say that I had lung issues when I was born that affected me into adulthood which is why I cough the stuff up. Perhaps you may have the same.
Rather than 5 years, I have 31 years for one thing, 26 years for the tobacco. I would like to give up the tobacco, but its hard. Anyone with good ideas on this would be welcome.
In answer to your question, yes - your lungs are being cleaned, but at great expense. It won't be able to keep it up forever.
