Jeep YJ 1988 , bad engine 4.2 L-maybe install older 4.0 carburetor ?

Motor in my Jeep is bad OK -I am thinking maybe install another engine from Jeep Cherokee 4.0 older model ? Is it big deal to do that or just take one off and install another one ? Is transmission in both Jeeps same or different ( I have automatic transmission ) .
Any help needed . I just want to fix my Jeep easiest way is possible .
 
i dont know too much but i have a jeep and i asked my dad a question like this once, he said that you have to stay with in your generation, and it has to be identical. like i have a 98 GC so i can get parts from 96-98. but not 99 cause theyre diif. lol srry but i hope ive helped!
