Jews, I have a question concerning "sin" in Judaism?

So there's a fellow Jew I know, (orthodox i believe) and we were talking about what's the meaning of Sin.
Hating somebody in your heart and lusting after a woman is not sin? The Ten Commandments is only surfacial? and judged based SOLELY on actions? There is nothing beyond it? Nothing with "spiritually"?
How can you say "sin" is not about living up to what God expects? That's like saying you're following something else while claiming to do so otherwise.
-So it's okay for me to hate somebody as long as I don't commit any violent acts?
@Todd Right: What?

answer: perhaps you should read the SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN commandments.

Sin in Judaism means "missing the mark" - not living up to what G-d expects of us.

Why do some questions read more like attacks on our SPIRITUALITY and religion?

Because that's what it is. Being human and having failings and striving to do our best. We know what is wrong. We fail, we repent, we make amends, we strive not to do it again WITHOUT the threat of eternal torment. Missing the mark means we have disappointed our 'parent' and have likely harmed others.

Isn't that the true definition of "sin"? Harming others or self?

twist it anyway you wish, it won't change the fact that Jews do know that sin is to be avoided if we wish to please G-d. Hating someone harms no one but yourself, ergo, it's a "sin". If you need it to be ultra simplistic: don't do it, it's a sin.
