I guess this is a little weird in timing considering I'm asking after the fact, but anyhow...
Two days ago I had to put my 17 year-old best friend to rest as she was battling aggressive lymphoma (as well as another type of cancer I cannot pronounce or spell) and she was having increasing complications. She had some xrays beforehand and it was determined her condition had worsened and would only get worse so we opted to do the right thing... our kitty was having trouble walking, going to the bathroom, etc. but she was in good spirits, friendly and stubborn to let anyone help her around, as was her normal personality.
My family (my parents are I) were present for the whole thing. My kitty was so calm and was purring while we waited with her. The vet came in and took her to put in the IV. She brought her back and left her with us for a few more minutes before coming to give the shot. She gave the injection with no fuss or protest from my kitty and within seconds everything was peaceful (albeit heartbreaking for us all), and it took less than 30 seconds until she was gone...
I've heard from friends or read online that a lot of vets use 2 shots... one to sedate and one to euthanize... my vet only gave the one shot. Is this normal? Like I said, my kitty was completely calm, resting and purring with us in the room and gave the vet no trouble putting the IV in, so I'm guessing no sedation was needed? Everyone I've told has asked if 2 shots were given, so I'm starting to think something is wrong... I tried looking up all the info I could online and seemed to come to the conclusion that sedation is not always used and is mostly used by request of owners or if deemed necessary by the doctor. Am I correct in this? I just want to make sure that the one shot was OK and not a misstep... I do trust my veterinarian and she was wonderful to my family during the whole process, but I just needed to make sure.

As far as calling them, I am afraid to call the vet and ask... I don't want the doctor to think I'm charging her with mishandling the situation if she didn't, you know? I just wouldn't know how to phrase it without sounding accusing.
