I need to lose about 50 lbs and I am trying to decide which will give me the best results karate or traditional cardio and weight training at the gym. Lets forget about which I will like better for now, my main goal is the weight loss and then eventual maintenance. My goal is to do both 3-4 times per week.
Thanks!

Karate would definitely be my choice. Because here you get to do a lot of physical activities plus if you regularly practice then at home and keep on doing the free hand exercises they teach you in karate class you'll definitely lose weight. Plus you'll be very agile and you'll be able to fight, fighting skills you can't acquire from a gym! Just make sure you don't slack off and keep practicing even when you don't have karate class. Go for it!

If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you need to change your lifestyle, not just do some short-term exercising. If you enjoy karate, then you are likely to stick with it and make it part of your life, whereas you may stop going to the gym as soon as you lose the weight you want to lose.

My advice is to find active things to do that you'll do every day for the rest of your life; maybe that means going to the dojo two or three times a week, jogging a few times a week, and playing in occasional sports leagues with your friends.

As far as eating, make small changes; cut out sugary drinks and junk food; don't go to fast food restaurants; and try to eat smaller meals more often.

Good luck!

well..chances are u need a combination of everything...

say Karate 2- 3 times a week

weight training 3- 4 days a week for 30 - 45 mins..thats all it takes

cardio on machine via elipitical or bicyle once a week 30 mins

karate alone might not be enough to give u fast results

and remeber u need to eat more protein and carbs

You're going to need to do weight training to loose any substantial amount of weight. Keep this in mind, cardio burns calories only while you're doing it. It's great for your heart and your stamina, also good for your skin and hair, but it needs to be done WITH weight training. When you lift weights you're building more muscle mass. Muscle expends ALOT of calories just to exists, thus you're burning calories while at rest (what some might call your metabolism). Basically, you speed up your metabolism when you weight lift and then cardio gives you a surge of calorie burning. Plus weight lifting is really good for back pain relief, and as long as you keep a good form it's easy on the joints.
