I know there's a lot of debate about this. And most people think a that a long manga will eventually get boring or stale after the 200-300 chapter mark. characters might get overdone, storyline might drag on.

But what if a Manga was brave enough to keep the same story, but keep advancing it to the point where characters need to be changed. say, 200 chapters in and there is a minor cast change. The son of the main character for example, is now the main character. Then story evolves some more, 400 chapters in, a distant character to do with the plot, becomes the main character to continue etc

Ive never seen that done, but im pretty sure it would be epic and would never get old.

I guess the only problem with the long ones, is money spent reading them. (although we have internet and sites for free now)

i really do hate it when a manga i have been following comes to an end. take Bleach, ive been reading it for a long time and i fear it is about to end. but i would loose intrest with the same cast of it continued. Surely, changing main characters and keeping the plot would be amazing?
Well, i'm currently having a go now. My manga Blaze

is estimated to be very very long. around 200 in there is an event causing a character change, due to 10 years going by. so the sons and daughters of the people from before take on the lead roles. then even later on, the story ends, however opens up a whole new plot
this means once again, new characters taking the role of lead etc i know it's never been done successfully, and i deffinately want to try

Long mangas usually have a lot of characters changes and new characters in them.
That would be boring if it stayed the same throughout.
That reminds me of DBZ, where Goku's son becomes the new main character.

I think that would be pretty cool but there are manga that don't need to go to such lengths to keep people interested, they may not be quite as long. They ending in that sweet stage were you want more but realise that if they wrote anymore it would ruin it. Like say Black Cat, Beck, Vagabond, Vinland saga. (last two obviously don't apply atm as they are unfinished)

While your idea is really quite interesting I think the fact that the artist gets bored is an issue when it comes to these instances as well. Imagine having to write the same plot for years and years, even if the character is different the world is still the same and the artist might want to work on something else which in turn might affect the quality. I've seen the same story played out but it was a much shorter manga (I think 7 volumes) Where it started with the main character as a kid and then ended with his son being rather old.

I guess if someone were to give it a go I'd definitely have a read though.
