Okay, have you ever had a book craving? Perhaps I am intellectually pregnant or something, but I really do have a craving to read a particular story. The premise is simple... A guy or girl finds a spaceship, takes possession of said spaceship in some way, and then like I said in the title - adventure ensues. Maybe they go out in space and fight a war or meet aliens or look at meteors or whatever, or perhaps they liven things up on this old planet instead.

I've tried the search engines repeatedly, but I fear this sort of detailed question will be hard to get an answer to in any other form than direct recommendation.

So, anyone that can fill my craving? I'm looking for books mainly, but other media can do in a pinch. Thank you!

You would think that that story would have been done a hundred times, but I can't think of a single example. There was an episode of "Star Trek" like that, though which show, I can't remember. "The Next Generation" or "Enterprise" I think. Maybe both.

That's an interesting premise, though. In the Laws of the Sea, a derelict (unmanned ship) is considered "salvage" and whomever will board her can claim her as "found property." That's why the captain goes down with the ship. he stays on board, because once he steps off, then the ship and its cargo are considered derelict and salvage.

I'd guess that in space, the same would be true, so a hero(ine) that boards a derelict could claim her, repair her, and fly her! We should write that story! Maybe there's ghosts aboard! Ghosts ... I think it was a Star Trek: Enterprise episode that had some plot like this ...

Try Anne McCaffrey's Brainship series - the human is actually the ship although there is oine where it focuses on the partner who flies the ship. The first one is The Ship Who Sang, the one I'm thinking of is The City Who Fought.

Otherwise try Elizabeth Moon who has written the Serrano Legacy (starting with Hunting Party - there are many) or the Vatta's War series (starts with Trading in Danger). All are good books. Good luck finding what you want.

See here for more books in the series: http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/m/elizabeth-moon/
