Looking for a sci-fi colonization(?) game?

I have been inspired by the re-imagined TV series Battlestar Galactica and I would like to know if anyone knows of any (good) games that puts the player through the process of saving the human race and making decisions that affect whether mankind continues to exist, etc.

I am not interested in "Eve" or the game "Battlestar Galactica Online". It might be something like the Maxis Sim or Civilization games but on a larger scale and the more things it covers (ie: mining, politics, military) the better.

Not even sure if 'colonization' is the right word to describe the type of game I am looking for.

Any ideas?

If you like retro type games like SimCity, you should check out a game called,

"Dust: A Tale of the Wired West".

It is not a colonization game but is an iconic classic from a company called "Cyberflix".

In this game you play a western man who has fled his previous residence because of a life threatening situation that arises..... After traveling in the desert you arrive in a small town called, "Diamondback".

It is here that you will meet the residents of this dusty town. You will engage in conversation and full dialogue, Eat food, Rent rooms, Steal, Get into gun fights, Get a job and your choices will effect the games outcome.

Being an origional purchaser I HIGHLY recommend this game to Everyone.
-----------

You can get it at www.piratebay.org

The company "Cyberflix" and
"GTE Entertainment" have dissolved.

A good space-age game is Sword of the Stars by kerberos games. You get to choose from one of six different races and fight for the survival of your civilization against1-7 other players or computers. There is a tech tree to research up with more than 250 different technologies, but the tree is different every time. Each race has different chances of discovering each technology, has its own propulsion system and efficiency. You have to make money, design ships, colonize the galaxy, fight others, negotiate and research different techs to survive. It is not free or online, you can get the full version at direct2drive for around 30 dollars, or try a demo from the SOTS website. Three ship classes and many specializations. Try it, it might be what you're looking for.
