If the NRA were working for the gun lobby, they would be trying to shut down second-hand sales instead of facilitate them. Second-hand sales are terrible for manufacturers--look at the lengths the video game industry has gone to shut down second-hand video game sales.

I don't like the NRA either, but I don't think there's a question that their post-1977 lobbying is because of sincerely-held beliefs of their leadership and many of their constituents, not because of pandering to the manufacturers.

Universal background checks are popular with every demographic. It even has approval in the 80%+ range among NRA members, yet the NRA opposes it. Why are they opposing it if their members overwhelmingly support it? Because it will lower gun sales among people who shouldn't be able to buy guns. That will eat into the manufacturers bottom line.

Because the majority who support universal background checks are silent and generally don't vote when it comes time to put new NRA leadership in place (I believe the percentage of NRA members who actually bother to vote for their leadership is around 3%). The more extreme someone's views are, the more likely they are to cause a stir within the organization and to cast a vote. The squeaky wheel gets the oil, and within the NRA, the "no regulations whatsoever" wheels are very squeaky and the moderates tend to be pretty quiet. This happens with a lot of political parties and activist groups; it's not a dynamic that's unique to the NRA.

Remember: we already have universal background checks for NEW firearms, just not USED.

I want to see Aikiwolfie get into a discussion with somebody who makes just as many assumptions, generalizations, and has an equal amount of limited information on the subject but holds no opinion back . . . . but from the pro-gun side. This thread is pretty darn good as far as gun debates go and there is so much to look into and different information/opinions given. I don't have much of a problem with your opinion Aikiwolfie, but if you look at the lengthy explanations of everyone participating in this thread vs. your sharp, taken as rude one-liners and how you write people off it definitely dictates the level of respect I have for anything you post.

Please link me to a source for this because I once sold guns as an FFL dealer and did background checks. Tell me how this is done.

I made a few suggestions and all I got was hyperbole in return. Sometimes life sucks that way.

One of the suggestions I made is that all gun owners should be members of clubs where they could be properly trained before being allowed to buy an arsenal of weapons. Why is this such a bad idea? Surely it helps the industry? It promotes responsible gun ownership. It should create a positive gun culture. But instead I'm berated for such a suggestion?

Why is this a bad idea?

If your a private citizen you can not buy guns from a distributor or manufacture and that is how you get a new gun . Private citizens sell used guns period. Ones they have bought from a dealer or another private citizen.

The so called "gun show lope hole" is a private citizen selling a used gun to another private citizen.

What they want to do is make private sell of used guns from one private citizen to another so hard it is discouraged. So to sell you gun if you want to up grade you have to sell it to a dealer at rock bottom price.

Suppose they did this with a auto and forced you to sell it to a dealer.

Because in the US gun ownership is a right and that right is already infringed with quite a bit. We have the 2nd amendment and it has overwhelming support.

uppose that like private used car sales, they required private used gun sales to be regulated? To complete a private used car sales, you have to go to the DMV. Why not require the background check with LE for private gun sales?

Aikiwolfie the website you referenced (coalition to stop gun violence) is as biased as any NRA propaganda. I'm not sure if you realized this. They are very misleading. Yes, some guns are purchased illegaly at gun shows. This is a problem that everyone but the extreme NRA leadership(and those with simular views) admits. Guns shows and "private dealers" are not the free for all that this site would have us believe.

It doesn't have to be a right though does it?
It's not written in stone.
People are prevented from owning, or regulated in owning, all sorts of things in the cause of public safety.

It effectively is written in stone. But you're right. Heck, there already are regulations. They just need to be enforced more.

This idea does not infringe your right to own a gun. It simply requires you to be properly trained. Are you really suggesting that anybody no matter what should be aloud to own a gun in America purely as a right?

Surely recent events have already shown that is a really bad idea.
