I was trained on the original SA80's and SA80 LSW in the Army Cadets. We also used the much older WWII Lee Enfield .303 and the Bren Gun. We had our own gun range. SA80s, SA80 LSW's and working Bren Gun's were supplied by the TA.



Is this directed at me or just a general question? Did you direct such a question at me before? I do apologise if I missed it.

The privet ownership of firearms isn't entirely prohibited. But it is very tightly controlled by legislation and has been progressively restricted further following several mass shooting incidents.

My concern was actually the availability of the weapon to a child. Not locking it away when no one is there. But I have to admit this whole "gun at the ready" stuff seems very bizarre. I couldn't live my life with that constant level of paranoia. I'd kill myself or someone else.



That's the point though. You're not keeping the government in check. Barrack Obama has prosecuted more whistle blowers than any other president in US history. This idea that the constitution and bill of rights keeps your government in check is pure fantasy.



Then wouldn't this support my suggestion all gun owners should be members of clubs where they can be properly trained? And yet there is resistance to that very suggestion.



And you seem not to understand the purpose of a gun. You keep trying to equate something designed to be destructive with something designed for more benign purposes.



So rural shootings are a big problem in America? Shouldn't someone try to address that problem?

Interesting way to look at US gun murders from 2010. It's quite sobering to see the data presented as lives that could have been. Lost years stolen away.

The problem of shootings or stabbings, these will never be eradicated

A person will be too naive and gullible to believe so

People are going to find a way to kill one another

As for guns being obtained for defense, this is no different knives, etc. for defense, and/or than a martial artist training in defense

By the large mass of people, I would think, per statistics; gun, personal, and even martial art defense, are low.

I have a extensive family-relative-acquaintance base, and taking a consensus among these, I had found hardly any gun/knife/martial art, or hard core defense have been used

Thus in these cases, within defensive mechanisms likewise to guns, personal/martial arts, home, etc., sometimes "the need", is spawn from anxiety resulting in media creating fear and over-the-top security.

The media seems to create the tension overall.

However, if one should reside in a heavy crime or violent area-then, of course, the chances of certain defenses within those certain parameters, will have to be met

For example, if there is a metro area with high percentages of shooting or gun crimes, one would have to arm themselves with the proper defense/gun to meet that level.

Per "Fighting Fire with Fire"

One can not take such a position against guns, stabbings, hard core violence if they are not subjected to it first hand on a routine basis or within such culture thereof

Nope. It is destructive. But so are knives, laundry bleach, ammonia, sulfuric acid, etc. There has to be -"ACCOUNTABILITY-RESPONSIBILITTY" (DOH!)





Because people who are raised in a poor environment subjected to violence and shootings will in turn have the same nature.

You cannot always stop crazy or someone with harmful intentions (DOH!)

But, we are talking about defense, not rampage

I guess you did not read the word "defense" in my post (DOH!)

I guess you really did not absorb that entire post as well

etc., will have the most in numbers of deaths per capita

Is it any wonder? I had trouble reading your whole post. Not exactly Mr Lucidity are you?

I get guns can be used for defence (like knives, martial arts etc).
It's the level to which they can be abused that makes them a different thing.



I have literally no idea what you are referring to (not for the first time). What the hell is a "molestation rampage"?

But shouldn't we do what we can to make that harder? The inclination toward violence may be inevitable. But to me, that only makes it more important to control the avenues through which that inclination can be expressed. I'd much rather someone tries to take my head off with a baseball bat than an assault rifle.

What can say. Your posts are fairly incomprehensible. But I do my best to understand them and in general I think I do a good job.

Stopping people with bad intentions is an intervention too late. What really needs to happen is to get society to a place where people have no need of those bad intentions. Where the ill, mentally and physically are cared for.

That's all a long way down the road. But you don't get there by instantly giving up. Which is what you seem to have done.

I would like to encourage everyone to please keep it civil. You only make yourself look foolish and iofftopicture when being insulting. People think this of you, even if they don't say it. I sometimes guilty of this as well.

Thanks for the wiki link about gun politics in the UK. While informative I really wanted firsthand information. Is purchasing a gun in the UK as hard a this article seems? Interviews, doctors notes, references, your references interviewed, planned storage place inspected, personal interview. Sounds like forms and fees commin out the wazzoo. I am hesitant to take wikis' word for it, it is easy to skew such information. I think some of you not in the US have inaccurate views because of the extreme bias in the media about this topic (on BOTH sides).
Also wondering how things work (purchasing/storing guns) for my neighbors to the north? Any Canadians here care to share? Thanks!

I might be willing to take that bet actually. But even assuming it's true, I'd wager you can't find any incidences of a "batting rampage." If we're talking purely about the capacity to do harm in numbers, there's no contest.

First hand? Most people in the UK will never have tried to purchase a gun, including me. We have no need for them. Airguns are fairly easy to buy. Including high powered models. But the only way to get some of the stuff that's available in America is to buy the weapon illegally.

Apart from air guns, I would imagine that shotguns are the most widspread type of firearm owned (legally) in the UK. Obviously you need to have a licence to own one, and I'd say they are mostly used just by farmers and people who shoot for a hobby.
