Man arrested for 2x4 labeled "High Powered Rifle"

I know there were other points of contention in the thread when I posted this, but NOBODY has anything to say about this "definition creep"? People keep saying "it's not about all guns, just assault weapons," but then New York legislation defined the term "assault weapon" to include all pistols currently on the market, and a Colorado bill currently working through the Colorado legislature defined the term "assault weapon" to include all pump-action and semi-auto shotguns currently on the market. Even setting aside whether the AR-15 should be restricted, this sort of "definition creep" really does make it seem like the new legislation is moving toward an outright ban of civilian firearms.

That concerns me. How do people here who say that they don't want to ban all guns, just "assault weapons," react to the definition of "assault weapon" in Colorado and New York legislation?

Disagree.

There are mass killings all over the world and done without guns.

People are going to kill each other with whatever they can get their hands on

Bombs take out a miltitude of people (as well as planes hitting a building)

Most everyone I have ever heard who wants "assault weapons" banned knows almost nothing about firearms. I find it very hard to take those views seriously. Durring the last "assult" ban, my shotgun was "illegal" because of the bayonet lug. As if that made it more dangerous.

Perhaps the fear of gun enthusiasts, is not a ban on a "particular" weapon, but a setting for future bans as a domino effect

For folks like the Brady institute, yes. Most individuals I have spoken with that support "assault" weapons ban don't realize that the term "assault weapon" does not really mean anything. They typicaly think it is a category like handgun, shotgun, ect. I've met several who thought it meant banning full-auto machine guns!

I guess any weapon used to initalize an attack to do another harm can be considered as a "assault weapon"

I think this is why we, as responcible gun owners, need to be understanding of others who support gun bans. We need to talk rationaly and honestly about guns. Most of these folks don't want to take all our guns away. They just want to live in a country that is as safe as it can be, which is exactly what I want too!

I can't agree with this enough. Many, many people I know think "assault weapon" means "full-auto." Or "more powerful." Or "designed for mass-murder." They don't realize that the term has no fixed definition and in some jurisdictions includes some very mainstream pistols, shotguns, and rifles.

Man, I really miss that ol Mossberg. It was a blast to shoot. Never should have sold it.

Lack of education on just about anything is a huge problem in the U.S. (and many other places) if you ask me. People love to have an opinion on a subject, but don't know anything about it or place themselves in a situation with people who do in order to learn about it. Judgment without understanding, makes me want to throat punch so many people throughout the day

im afraid i disagree they want all guns gone except a few hunting rifles ,like in the u.k. they simply dont understand, its not a simple concept. they expect the criminals guns to be miraculously gone also....not gonna happen people.

There is something truly, viscerally satisfying about a good pump gun (not to mention they're about as reliable as sledgehammers). I can relate to that.

i dont believe your negligent statistics, wence come they.....as far as fire exitniguisher verses guns ,talk about comparing apples and oranges, the whole concept is just plain stupid.

Which was my point in the first place

The real reason a lot of people want to own guns, I suspect.

At least for recreational/sport shooters, sure (self-defense-oriented people are another matter). If you ever find yourself on this side of the pond, I'll take you trap shooting and you can see for yourself. The fresh air, great scenery, the smooth action of the Browning's slide, the clack of a hull being ejected, the smoke-ring expelled out the barrel as you drop another shell into the chamber and slide the slide forward, the aroma of the shells, the explosive burst of a clay going into a half-dozen different pieces, or it spiraling off to side after you've shaved the left side of it off. It's great.

This is an over-under, not a pump-action, but it should convey the sheer sensory wonderful-ness of shooting clay pigeons.

And while I'm not a Franchi fanboy (I shoot a Browning myself), Franchi has some of the best ads out there for summing up the joys of shooting. Incidentally, the shotgun in the last video would soon be considered an "assault weapon" under Colorado law. *facepalm*

I'm rather partial to lever action myself...makes me feel all "Cowboy"

Crap all use tactically but still.....

I've done all that in the UK, several times. It's OK I suppose, but really doesn't float my boat that much.

Most people in the US want guns because they like guns, as I said before. It's really nothing to do with amendments or defence, it's more to do with the visceral and sensuous description you just gave.

Actually lever-actions have been recommended by guns.com as a "survival rifle" alternative to modern sporting rifles if the latter are taken off the market.

While I've never fired a lever-action myself, I think the appeal of lever-action rifles is probably similar to the appeal of pump-action shotgun.
