Margaret Thatcher has died

I worked cleaning floors, drains, cleaning dishes with my hands. Whilst in college.

Later I worked a 18hr shift for a wage of 12 GBP

I worked an 8 month stretch of those shifts without a day off (though 3 out of 7 days I didn't have to start until the afternoon).

Interestingly enough I heard an interview today with her chauffeur. He was friendly with her until the end of her life and spoke very highly of her.

He said that one of her few regrets was that she honestly thought giving tax cuts to the well off would create a giving, philanthropic society.

I can't decide if that makes her more deluded than I already thought or just a hopeless optimist let down by human nature.

There is no difference today, I'm talking 6-7 years since I worked those hours. And I'd do it again if I didn't have a wee one to look after.

Ill say it again. I was born poor, I lived through the same government you guys did. Now I'm not poor.

But I'm ready to debase myself to move up. It's like the limbo, how low can you go? And more importantly- how far can you push yourself out of your comfort zone and where your 'class' says you should be.

In a free market anyone who wants it enough can win.

I'm speaking from experience of trying rather than experience of not.

In real life, I'd gladly share a pint with any of you chaps and talk it through, we wouldn't be miles apart, if you can take the leap of faith.

Seriously? You don't think things are different how than 6 years ago? Have you been in a coma? Were you cryogenically frozen?

And you think that was solely down to your hard work? You don't think you got lucky at any point along the road?

Apparently you've pushed yourself all the way to the cloud cuckoo zone.

That's complete tripe.

You're an anecdote. You're not evidence of the infallibility of the free market.

Are you buying?

I know I could go get a job in a bar as a bar tender or bouncer tomorrow. Therefore it's the same.

If I can get a job it's no difference.

I'd gladly buy you the 29 pints you guys need for a night out if I had the chance.

Do it. As an experiment. Go out there and see how easy it is to find a job. Better yet, go out there with the kind of CV Joe Average has and see how easy things are.

You sound like a union rep.

I took that job in a situation where it was legal fwiw. Same job in the UK mandated a 15min break every hr and no more than 8hr shifts, double pay if it was past a certain hour.

1 hr paid more than a day where I went, but I went regardless as the options were better.

Many people I worked with decided it wasn't proper and returned home to their nice and controlled environments that we both left behind... And still earn their minimum wage and get their 15 minute breaks.

Like I said. Bars are full of people with IT qualifications. I have some useful tools in the box. But i don't have the connections to make them matter. Sadly who you know really does still matter.

Not true. I quit my job and moved to Asia without a job, work visa, accommodation, an ounce of the language and didn't know anyone. No money to speak of, lived in a hostel.

Worked out just fine.
