Well it was the labor force engaging in the anti-thatcherism. People who do physical work for a living can hardly be expected to stay focused on an esoteric subject for more then a few pages. It was only obvious that the thread would spiral down to discussion on video games, or sports and drinking at some point . . . . right?

Well speaking of sports! It was Thatchers government that closed all the youth clubs and now the ConDemed are forcing the closure of sports facilities by cutting council budgets to the point where they can't afford to keep them open.

But we're told their will be some kind of sporting legacy from the Olympics? ... How often does history have to repeat before people figure out the scam?

Why should me liking or not liking someone provoke anger? That's on them not on me.

The funny part was his reasoning, the guy's 19, he doesn't even know why he hates Thatcher he does because people around him do. He wasn't even alive during Thatcher's reign and the best he could come out with was "milk for the kids".

That's what was funny, if you don't get that I suggest you take a look at things objectively instead of just reacting.

No, it would just be a correlation. Correlation is not causation. Once one demonstrates a correlation, he must gather evidence to prove causation (thus establishing a demonstrable, empirical fact). /nitpick

As the person who started this thread, and being only 20 years of age (not even alive during Thatcher's reign). Why don't you instead of "lol" state what you have against her instead of celebrating?

Do you just follow the crowd or do you have a legitimate reason?

I'm sure a lot of people in here have legitimate reasons to dislike Thatcher or her policies, but so far a lot of it sounds like this:

I'm in my first year of college and am about to take a dive into a lot of science/math courses. Give me another year and I'll speak the lingo fluently!

Because those people also represent political views which have a direct impact on peoples lives.

Thatcherism stretches far further than the 80's I wasn't even alive during her reign but I still get to feel the effects of both her policies and the continuing aftershock of her political philosophy.

The current government is continuing her project of stamping all over those who are in desperate need and is using her death as a way of drumming up support for their own policies. Supporting Thatcher and buying into the nonsense that she is someone that the British public should be mourning is lending support to a narrative that is being used by this very government to kick the legs out from under communities as we speak.


You're playing the whole "oh I'm objective, because I don't care" card... but your apathy and aloofness towards those who feel passionate about politics (that stuff that makes and breaks peoples lives on a personal level) doesn't lend you any credibility at all. Failing to emote is not a sufficient sign of objectivity, as often it is also a sign of a failure to understand. The whole "Look at this important issue that I fail to care about" is a classic and boring memetic response by young people who don't really understand the fuss but want to give the impression that they are "thoughtful".

This thread is filled with people articulating why they despise Thatcher, it's packed to the brim with discussions on privatisation and wealth redistribution; if you still don't know what the arguments against Thatcher are, I suggest you work on your reading comprehension. It's all here, you just have to take the time to actually read it.

That's not how our society works, so please leave it out. He's entitled to feel however he likes about it, as are you.

You say that what we are going through today is linked to Thatcher. I think it's a rather tenuous one at best. Sure, she started a big shake up in this country to how things were before, but her leg finished around 24 years ago. That is a hell of a long time whether it's in politics or not.

As for linking her to the problems we face today, this is highly debatable. One of the reasons we are in our current situation is that we now have such huge public borrowing and debt, where as in Thatchers day it was just private borrowing. It was never a Thatcher policy to borrow such a high amount. Our countries debt mountain has absolutely nothing to do with her. Neither can we blame her directly for allowing the banking crisis to happen. This public debt is mainly the work of Brown and Blair, as was their cosy relationship with the financial industry also a factor one must presume for them not being regulated by the FSA in a proper way.

At the moment we look to be heading back to a similar situation that we had in the Seventies. Currencies being devalued and high inflation. The government can't deal with the massive public debt through austerity, so the only way it can clear it's debts is through manipulation and taking from its citizens - all of them. Devaluing of our money coupled with high inflation has the economic effect of eroding debt.
