Is the PFT that difficult? in order to have a perfect score you must complete 20 pull-up, 100 crunches and a 3 mile run in 18 mins. I want to join the marines and i've been training, but damn is it possible to acheive a decent score?

I'd also say that the pull-up is the biggest challenge and has the biggest contribution to the scores. Like the guy above said, Just one or two pull ups away is too much points to waste. When i used to go to Marine PT at the recruiting office, i could only do 2 front start. After few more PT's i was able to do six. Then i got one of those things you put on the door and do pull ups. I definitely recommend getting it. It costs like 30 bucks, but it really works. Just whenever your walking in or out of your room do as many as you can and just do it in random times, you don't have to do it just while working out. I did that and within a month i can do 15 pull ups. So yea get it :D.

Crunches is, in my opinion, is a lot easier than regular sit ups. But im not saying it isn't difficult. My Marine recruiter told us during PT that, "Whenever your watching tv on your lazy a**, get up and do crunch on the floor or on the couch!" and hey it works. During a commercial see how many crunches you can mustard up.

Running is pretty much self explanatory. But i agree, 3 miles in 18 min is woohoo hard. I ran Cross Country and did 3.1 miles in 21 min but that's just me. Just run a lot, more over first work on just endurance. Don't focus on running 3 miles in 18min, but rather 5 miles instead. You don't have to time it, just go at the pace you want, and after a while you'll build up. Then when it comes to 3 miles, it'll be a lot easier.

Of these are just my experiences in training when i did it. I ended up joining army, that's why i said my Marine Recruiter. Best of trainings to you mate.

heres a Tip. Focus on pullups most. 20 pullups = 100 pts. 15 = 75 a 25 point difference for only 5 pullups is HUGE. To increase by 25 points on the run alone requires you to run like a whole 2 minutes faster which is quite difficult. Crunches are easy and everyone should get 100.

Get 100 crunches and 20 pull ups, and your only 25 points away from a first class PFT score, not even including your run score!

yea its possible and common among other recruits. about 75-80 on average pass. pull-ups i do 12, crunches 60, and as a poolie we run 1.5 miles and have to make it under 13:30 i did this in a 12:47. the test for poolie's is called the initial strength test IST. you got to pass this before boot camp.

but yea all i can say is get yourself in pretty decent shape. the run is not that bad as others see it you just got to prepare yourself and maintain a good stride.
