Mass air flow sensor - 97 Mazda 626?

I've had the car since 2002. Had to have MAF rebuilt in 2006 and 2008. Having same problem again, this time mechanic cleaned it, charged $100 and it didn't help. I'm now being told by mechanic to unplug it...is that really going to solve my problem??? Can I just drive around w/it being unplugged w/out it harming anything??
 
check for corroded electrical contacts at the mass flow sensor and its plug. if you unplug it, the check engine light will come on all the time and you might have some hesitation in engine performance
