The Berzerker
Pantera
Gorgoroth
Threat Signal (well, that's not real metal, but still good)
One Brick Down
The Last Days of Humanity (XDDDDD)
Skinless
Slipknot (yeah I fucking went there. Only their self-titled album and Vol 3 though, the others suck)
Jungle Rot

And I am too tired so I can't remember but there's a lot. I would recommend just going on Youtube and looking around.

Black Sabbath
Original "Heavy Metal" band, they started it all, and are such an amazing group.

Iron Maiden
Pioneers of Heavy Metal and NWOBHM - astounding group to this very day.

Judas Priest
Along with Iron Maiden, pioneers of heavy metal and NWOBHM, astounding group, not a big fan of their recent releases.

Ozzy Osbourne
Original vocalist for Black Sabbath, absolutely stellar solo career. Not a fan whatsoever of his more recent stuff.

Dio/Rainbow
Dio. God of Metal. His solo career, along with his work in Rainbow are among the best metal acts of the '70s-'90s.

Recommendations..
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath, Vol. 4, Sabotage, Heaven and Hell
Iron Maiden - Killers, The Number of the Beast, Seventh Son of A Seventh Son, Powerslave
Judas Priest - Stained Class, British Steel, Unleashed in the East, Sad Wings of Destiny
Ozzy Osbourne - Ozzmosis, No More Tears, Ultimate Sin, The Essential
Dio - Holy Diver, The Last in Line, Strange Highways, Dream Evil
Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Rising, Long Live Rock 'n Roll, On Stage

I'll do you one better and list 5 of my favorite bands from some of my favorite metal sub-genres. For someone switching over from punk to metal I would recommend getting into thrash metal first as it probably has the most punk influences.

(Early Metal/Pseudo Metal)
Black Sabbath
Judas Priest
Led Zeppelin
Deep Purple
Motorhead

(Progressive Metal)
Fates Warning
Dream Theater
Manilla Road
Opeth
Porcupine Tree

(Thrash Metal)
80's Metallica
Megadeth
Testament
Slayer
Death Angel

(Black Metal)
Bathory
Emperor
Immortal
Dissection
Enslaved

(Death Metal)
Death
Morbid Angel
Bolt Thrower
Nile
Entombed (early)

(Melodic Death Metal)
At the Gates
Dark Tranquillity
In Flames (early)
Eternal Tears of Sorrow
Kalmah

(Doom Metal)
Candlemass
Solitude Aeturnus
Anathema
My Dying Bride
Draconian

(Symphonic Metal)
Savatage or Trans Siberean Orchestra
Therion (first few albums were death metal)
Nightwish
Epica
Haggard

That is all for now, except I'll give you a couple links to get started

a Esoteric Young man has a good list too, several of those bands I would have recommended too had I made my list bigger.

Black Sabbath - the band generally accepted as being the band that created the metal genre and their album "Paranoid" is a must hear for anyone regardless of whether they consider themselves a metal fan or not.
War Pigs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZCyOWLrRTE

Judas Priest - Black Sabbath might have brought the sound to metal, but Judas Priest brought the vocals to it, Rob Halford's voice is legendary. Check out the album, "British Steel" first, I promise you won't be disappointed.
Breaking the Law http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RATEoDH9WiY&feature=fvsr

Iron Maiden - Classically inclined shredding and one of the best frontmen in metal history. I recommend "The Number of the Beast" as a good album for a new fan of the metal genre.
The Number of the Beast http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2y_Cq76r9s

Metallica - Their later releases aren't much, but in their earlier days these guys released some of the best metal music ever. "Master of Puppets" is a great album to start off with.
Master of Puppets http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV3DJzT0ndI

Dio - Ronnie James Dio is the best metal vocalist ever, no question. "Holy Diver" is a must have album. RJD also fronted Black Sabbath for a time, and I definitely recommend giving "Heaven and Hell" a listen as well.
Rainbow In The Dark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYlDltwm-JY

Sepultura - Good ol' Brazilian metal. "Chaos A.D" isn't as thrashy as the band's earlier releases, but it's my favorite album from the band and a good starting point for a new fan.
Refuse/Resist http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lqa4tsg8rY

Amon Amarth - Melodic death metal with vocals that are actually very easy to decipher and lyrics about vikings. If you're interested in that kind of thing at all check out "With Oden On Our Side"
Runes to My Memory http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFcVlsxqBbA

Pantera - Metal from my home state of Texas. Started out as a glam metal band, but with the arrival of Phil Anselmo on vocals they quickly become a much heavier outfit. "Vulgar Display of Power" is a landmark groove metal album, in my opinion.
Walk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4_huqm7usE

Megadeth - Remember how I said that Metallica's later releases aren't much compared to their later stuff? Not true for Megadeth. When Metallica was falling short, Megadeth was releasing some legendary thrash albums, namely "Rust in Peace"
Rust in Peace...Polaris http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hVqpjZ8qWM

System of a Down - I might get a lot of flack for including a nu-metal band on this list, but System of a Down really is a great band and Serj Tankian has one of the most unique voices in the genre. "Toxicity" is my SOAD album rec.
Chop Suey! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAQ0dvIun1A&feature=related
