name 5-10 bands that i must hear? if you can name like 5-10 essential metalbands and explain something about each band that would be awesome ive been a punk fan for years and im exploring music, like i said i know hardly anything about metal music so if you can give me some bands to look up id appreciate it, any info on what makes them good would be nice

Original vocalist for Black Sabbath, absolutely stellar solo career. Not a fan whatsoever of his more recent stuff.

Dio/Rainbow
Dio. God of Metal. His solo career, along with his work in Rainbow are among the best metal acts of the '70s-'90s.

MUSHROOMHEAD their music is all mixed tunes and really tripy and freaky, and their riffs r good.
METALICA they r said to be the biggest metal band in the world their guitar solos and riffs r fricken awesome

mallory metalica were the past and r now still recording in the present and even though people might not think it, they r the BIGGEST metal band in the world. Im not just saying that, its the truth look it up

Black Sabbath - the band generally accepted as being the band that created the metal genre and their album "Paranoid" is a must hear for anyone regardless of whether they consider themselves a metal fan or not.

Judas Priest - Black Sabbath might have brought the sound to metal, but Judas Priest brought the vocals to it, Rob Halford's voice is legendary. Check out the album, "British Steel" first, I promise you won't be disappointed.

Iron Maiden - Classically inclined shredding and one of the best frontmen in metal history. I recommend "The Number of the Beast" as a good album for a new fan of the metal genre.

Pantera - Metal from my home state of Texas. Started out as a glam metal band, but with the arrival of Phil Anselmo on vocals they quickly become a much heavier outfit. "Vulgar Display of Power" is a landmark groove metal album, in my opinion.

Megadeth - Remember how I said that Metallica's later releases aren't much compared to their later stuff? Not true for Megadeth. When Metallica was falling short, Megadeth was releasing some legendary thrash albums, namely "Rust in Peace"
