motorola droid 2 keyboard light weird issue?

i have a moto droid 2 and im having a strange problem. when i hit the lock screen button the keyboard lights up for 1 second and turns off and wont comeback on until i repeat the process. the light sensor works because when im in a call the screen turns off and on correctly. but i cant text at night because i cant see the keyboard
