Motorola Minitor IV malfunction?

What would cause my Motorola Minitor IV fire pager to malfunction. I can no longer recieve tones. All I get now is static. And I will occasionally pick up a weather station (very eratically). I was messing around with it by holding the button and turning it on with the different channels. I called my cheif and he said to change the batteries. I did that and it still does the same thing. I'm about two counties away from home (and it used to still pick up tones from my county), but I'm not able to go back home cause I'm a student at a university with no personal vehicle on campus. Any advice?
