Mountain Bike Training, Q1 level. Need to prep.?

I need a training regiment so over the winter I can get into good shape for mountain bike training. My friend who's a Q3 (i think i've got that right?) is helping me out, but I prefer being self sufficient when it comes to this stuff. Can someone jot down a good training regiment that'd prepare me and preferably improve my skills for mountain biking?

Good links below for either a road cyclist or mountain biker. Get a good magnetic or fluid trainer. Use a slick tread rear tire to prevent noise. Vary the resistance. On nice days - get out & ride! And by "nice days", I mean any time the roads are not ice and/or snow covered & the sun is out.

I've been out in weather down to 22 degrees in sunshine with little to no wind. No car - no choice.
