It depends on the quality of the audio you upload to your ipod...

To change the Equalizer go on your ipod into Settings>EQ and choose the setting. I find that you can hear most of the vital frequencies on the 'Dance' or 'Hip-Hop' settings. Make sure you've got some good quality headphones too.

- Any of the Hifiman models
- Teclast T51 or upcoming T59
- Ipod Classic 5th-gen with line-out dock and external volume control (if no amp).

If you already own the 5th or 5.5 gen you could get it modded for better sound quality, with either the Red Wine Audio mod or Whiplash Audio mod.

A Classic is good enough for me. You can get your iPod to sound better by using a line-out dock, a headphone amp, and a good pair of headphones. I use a Sendstation dock and a Headroom Total Bithead amp, both available from http://www.headphone.com. The sound through my Shure SE530 IEMs is great...

If you really want an alternative to the iPod, you could check out the HifiMan players available from http://www.head-direct.com
