at first we were told the fuel pump wasnt working because a my dad was running out of gas and when we got off the freeway to put gas the engine stopped (probably due to the low revs or whatever reason) He then tried to restart the car a number of times, and we were told the fuel pump probably became corroded or something like that. Luckily our friend had premium AAA and let us use her service to tow the car to the dealer which was a good 50 miles. So the dealer said it could be something with the ignition and if its not that then its probably the fuel pump. We paid 325$ for them to do work on the ignition or whatever it was, since they said it was a tough job and we couldnt do it ourselves. That wasnt it, so me and my dad replaced the fuel pump still at the dealers, since the ignition thing didnt work. Well after we replaced the fuel pump it still didnt work. (the guy who towed our car also stated that he didnt hear the fuel pump engage when he tried starting the car. And our neighbor said you should probably replace it since our car has 145k miles on it or something close to that and we dont want to get stranded somewhere else if the fuel pump goes out.) The VW dealer says theyll take a look at it and fix it for free. Well they look at it for free, but then they tell us the timing belt is screwed up, bad timing or something. I thought to myself, "wouldnt they have noticed the timing belt was messed up right away? especially since they did a diagnostic." Well we pay like 700$ for the work on the timing belt. The car started a handful of times, but was very "shaky" when started and would often die when you first try starting the car, for example you cant idle for more then a second when first starting the car. Is it because my valves are messed up that it was shaky?
And how come it no longer starts? My dad thinks the distributor cap needs to be replaced. He says that the spark comes out from the side (where there is a black mark) I dont see a hole for it to come out, is this possible?
and do you think replacing the distributor cap will allow it to start?
I should also add when the car first broke down, it will always turn over and try and start. I from the very beginning had said that maybe we needed new spark plugs, but wouldnt the dealer know this from the get go using the diagnostic thing?
Anyone with any ideas or suggestions please let me know. Thanks!
Hopefully we can just replace the distributor or something cheap so we dont need to spend anymore money. My moms the only one with a job right now and weve had to spend a lot of money this month on surgery for my dog, medical stuff for me, and now my car too!
