My AVI files won't play after I installed the latest DivX player(?). What should...

...I do? My fault is that I disregarded the little note it had said prior to the download process--said it would interfere with some of my files, indeed. Since it won't open automatically, I already put WMP (again) as the default program to launch my AVI files. Audio is perfectly fine, but there is no video, just like a thumbnail of something from the vid. I uninstalled the DivX. It still won't play the video. I know it has something to do with the codecs or something. I have to download an older version of DivX, is that right? If so, which one? If I got it all wrong, please do point me to the right direction. I thank you in advance, whoever you are. :)

search for google and get the FFDSHOW from sourceforge website
if it still doesn't work get VLC media player from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
or just get VLC first and might not even need FFDSHOW with VLC installed

Divx has a limited number of codecs so it cannot play all avi files. It doesn't matter what version of Divx you have. You do not need VLC. I would install ffdshow tryouts, it's a library of direct show filters that should allow you to play any avi on Windows Media Player. It is also the main component of almost all codec packs.

to find out what video and audio codecs any video requires you can use Media Info Lite. It will give you all the info you need about any media file...what type of video it is, what type of audio and a lot more.
