My bike chain keeps on crunching when ever I change gears. what could the problem be?

My bikes a road bike (the brand is Merida).

Every time I shift gears the chain stutters and crunches and doesn't seem to grab hold smoothly.

Sometime when I'm in gear and pedaling uphill it just crunches unexpectedly , as if the chain is about to come of.

what could the problem be?

sounds like your chain has stretched and may need a link or 2 taken out to ensure safe changing of gears
