It sounds like a starter motor problem but the noise mostly comes from the top of the engine. It always starts first time every morning but after a short drive it can take many many turns to start the engine. I have purchased a new starter motor but I am not sure now wether this is what is wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Try cleaning the battery, starter , alternator, engine block ground posts by removing them one by one and cleaning them fully with a wire brush and be sure that you clean the bolts etc too.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way even if it's not the starter you can always return a new starter as long as it wasn't used and you've the receipt. What I'd try to do is remove your old starter take it to a starter rebuilder shop and have them test it but mark it before you do.

I have just rectified a similar problem, but the other way round, with my VW. My car has always been a very reliable starter but recently I have had problems starting from cold but perfect running and starting once warmed up.

After checking all the plugs and full ignition system I localised the problem to the cold start fuel enrichment.

Try disconnecting the engine temperature sensor when the engine is warm to see if it makes any difference. The temperature sensor on the VW cost less than £20 and was very easy to change. This has cured my problem completely and my car has never run better, possibly because most of the ignition system has also been replaced.

Starting is usually more difficult in the morning because the oil is cold and the battery is at its least efficient. This leads me to believe that the problem is NOT with your starter motor. Starting a warm engine should be easier.
