It's coming from the belt area but I can't narrow it down to what the problem is and it's very annoying. I had a new belt put on and had the pulleys cleaned before that. The squeaking went away for about two weeks then returned. I had it looked at again and a tensioner was installed but the squeaking continued so I took it back to the shop and they installed an idler pulley but of course the squeaking continued. I'm not sure what the problem could be unless the belt they installed in the first place wasn't a good belt or not tight enough but it's been taken off at least two times and put back on so it had to be installed correctly at least one of those times. When water is thrown on the belt the squeaking goes away immediately which I've heard means it's the belt itself. It's driving me crazy. I have no water leakage so I'm assuming it's not the water pump plus it's not running hot. I'm thinking possibly and bad bearing in the alternator but hoping not. The car is a 2000 Ford Taurus.
