My CD/DVD drive stopped working all of a sudden. What do I do?

I was playing a game (FIFA 08) on my computer when all of a sudden the game stopped and it flashed the message 'No CD/DVD ROM found". I kept clicking 'Retry' but it didn't work so I shut the game down.

I initially thought it was a problem with the FIFA 08 disk, but then I found my drive no longer shows up on My Computer, and I found it can't run any disk at all (CD or DVD).

I also tried using System Restore to put the computer back to when the drive was working, but no luck.

I'm sure it isn't a virus or anything because I scan absolutely everything I put in my computer from outside.

What should I do now?

I use a Compaq laptop with Windows Vista, if that helps.

It is most definitely not a software issue. When booting, go into your BIOS and see if the drive is recognized there. My guess is not. If so, remove the drive from the laptop, clean some contacts and insert it again. Reboot and see if it is found. If not, your drive is most likely broken.

its possible the laser reading the cd is worn out or dirty.you can get a cleaning kit but if you jam all the time you can buy an external for a resonable price and they work well i here.
