...the CPU unit. What gives? I have a e-machines W3118 Desktop PC, and recently the computer has been displaying an error message when I try to use the DVD/CD-RW drive to watch a movie, rip a CD, or burn a CD. It says it cannot detect a CD-ROM device. I wanted to know how can I get my machine to recognize its own disc drive, and is it possible for me to burn DVD's even though I don't have a DVD RW drive.

No you can not burn dvds with out the drive. Try making sure your drivers are up to date. But your best bet it to replace the drive.

its very simple. it may be the problem with the hardware. just plug out the dvd wire which is connected to motherboard and later connect it again. it should work. it happens to everyone at times

second question: NO you have a DVD-ROM (Read Only Memory) you need the RW (Re-Writer) to burn one

Check whether the Drive letter available in My Computer(For windows...). If not check Drive's Data Cable n Power cable.
If those cables ok, PC should automatically identify those kind of Devices.

To burn DVD, U can have "DVD WR"(DVD Writable). But this is once burning
What all "DVD RW" does is writing again n again. Which may little expensive that "DVD WR"
