My computer won't recognize a CD-R disc. It recognizes a DVD though?

I am trying to burn a disc and can't do it when I realized my computer won't recognize a cd-r disc at all. I tried a dvd and that worked fine. When I put the disc in it makes that "whirring" sound and then stops and starts and stops, etc, but then nothing ever happens and I keep getting the message to insert a blank disc.
 
Your drive might not be compatible with -R or the disc itself might be defective. Finally, you might need to update your player's firmware/software..
 
If your Computer is still under warranty, take it into any place that sells that particular brand of computer tell them what is wrong and they will run a diagnostics on it to find out what the specific problem is.
You may have to ged your CD burner replaced.
