My display is smaller than my monitor!?

I have a MacBookPro, just purchased in the fall of 09. I came home yesterday and suddenly the display is centered on the monitor, narrow and annoying with 2 or 3 inches of space on either side. I can't get it to fill the monitor... help help help....

go to control panel and adjust screen resolution.. then make sure the number 1 is bigger then the 2.. okay it might be totally useless coz i use a windows 7 but its wortha try :)
