My dvd Rom drive won't read detect etc....?

i have a compaq presario SR1220nx and well my cd-rom part works but when i put a dvd it does nothing. i have window xp home edition and i'm also trying to install adobe creative suite 4 design premium and still nothing my cd's will do fine but my dvd nothing what is wrong with it oh and also it's a dvd/cd-rom together and the product name is asus crw- 4832As i try everything download dvd decoder update driver and still nothing can anybody help thanks
 
BEWARE THIS FIX INVOLVES MODIFYING THE REGISTRY. ONLY USE IF YOU ARE CONFIDENT WITH WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

run regedit
go to local machine>system
>currentcontrolset>control>class

go down each folder under that directory until you get to the DVD/CD drives

delete the upper and lower filter keys

restart the computer and it should be better
