My hard drive is broken, what do i do?

I plug my hard drive in and it makes like the fan noise and one light lights up. .But nothing shows up. My dad said that the cable that plugs into is broken, like where you plug it in in the harddrive is messed up or something. But i dont know what to do! I need it asap. :s
