My hp laptop's hard drive light is constantly blinking. Is this normal?

I have a dv5-1153ei hp laptop.. the hard drive light keeps blinking, and when i close the laptop it flashes red and starts blinking again when i re open it.. what's the meaning of this? please help, i'm a bit worried...
the laptop is on when i close and then open it.. i wonder why this happens.. the red light is particularly worrying

i'm not a big computer expert, but i think that it means that its either working, needs charging, or thinking up some diabolical plan to take over the world!!!
