my ipod icon wont pop up in the itunes sources list. helpp?

so i bought an ipod nano thats pink yesterday. im not familiar with using itunes but i know enough to listen with music and yeah. so like when i plugged it in, the icon doesnt show in the sources list in itunes. ive tried toggling with the hold switch then holding the menu and the select button til the apple appears but, i just cant seem to make it pop up. and when i look into itunes all it says is that there is no ipod connecting. gah its just bugging me. how do i get it to work?!
i dont even think that my computer is detecting the ipod.
 
restart ur computer, close out everything before opening iTunes, plug it in, let it charge a bit leave it alone, then come back. sometimes they need to charge when they're new.
