My Nokia XpressMusic 5800's touch screen isn't working?

If I tap on the screen really hard, one of the icons will highlight red, but none of the options or the actual application will pop up. I've already turned my phone on and off numerous times, not to mention taken my battery out and also my sim card. I don't know what it is and it's really started to frustrate me :( any ideas?
