...did this happen & is it serious? Does anyone know if its expensive to get fixed and would it be the way i drove the car to make this happen
 
it will cost you £5 from a breakers yard...and no,lol,its not they way uyou drive.
 
cost you around £90, a second hand one is fine if you can guarantee it works.
common fault on these and nothing to do with how you drive the car.
