My PS2 Controller isn't working, what do I do?

So I just got a new game for my ps2 and when I putit in. It says the controller is not connected. SO I cleaned it, and cleaned the disc and it still doesn't work! But when I try it will another game it works fine??? What should I do?
How do you check the connection?
